For All Visitors:

Marine Mammal Care Center is dedicated to providing a high quality experience for visitors, just as we provide the best possible care for recovering marine mammals. You can help!

FAQs:

Q: What if we arrive early?

A: Due to hospital animal care scheduling, we cannot visit with your group until 10:30am. We recommend that groups visit the Korean Friendship Bell across the street, the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium or wait at the picnic tables near the parking lot until their scheduled tour time. However, it is important to note that animal care personnel are not involved in giving tours.  For safety reasons, animal care personnel are not permitted to answer questions while inside enclosures. Please do not ask questions of them.

Q: How close can we get to marine mammals on our tour?

A: It is a rare opportunity to see seals and sea lions up close. All viewing of seals and sea lions is done outside of fencing that is only a few feet away from animal enclosures.

Q: How can we best conduct ourselves and instruct younger visitors during a tour?

A: PLEASE  keep voices quiet and do not shake the fence. Any questions can be directed to the docent(s).

Q: What is the fee for a tour / visit?

A: There is no mandatory fee unless your group is part of a professional tour or sightseeing organization. But, we appreciate donations of cash or from our wish list to support our non profit hospital, which relies on contributions from visitors like you!  Here is a link to our wish list https://marinemammalcarecenterlosangeles.com/wish-list/

Q: If we schedule a tour, how long will we be at MMCC LA?

A: You should allow about an hour for your visit.

Q: Why do groups of more than ten visitors have to sign a waiver?

A: The MMCC LA hospital is located on LAUSD property. LAUSD requires the waiver for all group activities.

Q: Can we walk through the hospital?

A: Group tours do not include a behind-the-scenes view of the hospital. This is for the safety of our patients and visitors.

Q: Can we meet with the Vet?

A: Animal Care staff is dedicated to providing quality patient care and are not available for tours. Scheduled docent-led tours will be able to ask questions of our experienced Education volunteers and docents.

Q: Are there bathrooms on site?

A: Yes

Q: Is there a picnic area to have lunch?

A: There are a few picnic tables near the parking lot, away from animal enclosures.

Q: Do you sell food or drinks at the gift shop?

A: No

Q: Which credit cards do you take at your gift shop?

A: Mastercard and Visa

Q: What times are animal feedings?

A: Generally, animal feedings occur at approximately  6:30 AM, 11:00 AM, and 3:00 PM, but these times fluctuate with animal care needs.

Q: Where do we leave our donation of wish list items when we come visit?

A: Cash donations can be placed in the donation boxes.  Donations of wish list items can be placed on the cart across from the gift shop.

Q: Do you allow dogs at the MMCC LA?

A: Dogs are not allowed near animal enclosures. They are allowed in the parking lot and at the picnic tables near the parking lot. The closest a dog may be is the colorful table and umbrella across from the gift shop.

Q: Is parking available?

A: Yes, Free parking is available in a large parking lot adjacent to the hospital. The lot can accommodate cars, RVs and buses.

Q: Anything I should know about finding you?

A: MapQuest, Google Maps or any other apps for directions, will not lead you directly to the facility. Once you are in San Pedro and on Gaffey St, continue south on Gaffey St toward the ocean. Turn right onto 32nd street and follow the road up and around to the end.  Turn right at the end.  Turn right into the parking lot and MMCC LA is on the right side behind Angel’s Gate High School.
